Urge Your U.S. Representative to Support the Bear Protection Act
The U.S. House of Representatives is considering an important wildlife bill that has the potential to save the lives of tens of thousands of bears worldwide. Your U.S. Representative, Tim Mahoney, needs to hear your support today. Please urge Rep. Mahoney to co-sponsor this bill to protect bears!
The Bear Protection Act (H.R. 5534) would protect bears from poaching by prohibiting the import, export, and interstate commerce of bear gallbladders and bile for underground trade in Asian pharmaceuticals and non-medical items including shampoos and hemorrhoid creams. Some investigators have estimated that for every bear killed by sport hunters in the U.S., at least one additional bear is slaughtered by poachers and found with their abdomens sliced open and their gallbladders removed.
TAKE ACTION
Please make a brief, polite phone call to urge Representative Mahoney at (202) 225-5792 to co-sponsor the Bear Protection Act.
When you call, you will likely speak to a staff member who will pass your message along to Representative Mahoney. Remember to be polite and professional, and leave your name and address so it is clear that you are a constituent. You can say:
"Hello, my name is [your name] and I live in [your town]. As a constituent, I'm calling to urge Representative Mahoney to co-sponsor H.R. 5534, the Bear Protection Act. The U.S. Congress should take steps to stop the poaching of bears for their gall bladders. Thank you."
After making your call, please send a follow-up email to Representative Mahoney to urge support for the Bear Protection Act.
And don't forget to tell your friends and family how they can take action on this critical legislation, too.
Thank you for all you do for animals.
Sincerely,
Mike Markarian
Executive Vice President
The Humane Society of the United States
