Aerial Killing Season Could See Record Wolf Deaths

Watch our new video and help us stop the massacre

Sarah Palin is planning what could be the bloodiest aerial wolf killing season yet in Alaska.

Already this winter, aerial gunners in Alaska have slaughtered at least 47 wolves. More wolves were killed this past November than in any November in the past five years. And, under Governor Palin’s out-of-control wolf-killing program, nearly 600 more wolves could die before this year’s season is finished.

Wolves are dying right now, and we need your help to stop the killing.

Please
watch our new video and make a year-end tax-deductible contribution of $25.00, $50.00, $100.00 or whatever you can afford will help us end aerial killing of wolves and protect other imperiled wildlife.

With new leadership in Washington and unprecedented awareness about Governor’s Palin’s senseless killing programs, we’re now in a better position to stop this terrible, needless practice and save wolves.

With your support, we will…

  • Forcefully oppose efforts by Governor Palin and her Board of Game to arbitrarily kill even more wolves just to boost game populations for out-of-state hunting interests;
  • Shine the national spotlight on Governor Palin’s brutal wolf-killing programs and pressure her to end them;
  • Work with the incoming Obama/Biden Administration to close the loophole in the Federal Airborne Hunting Act that Governor Palin is exploiting to continue Alaska’s unfounded aerial wolf killing programs; and
  • Build support in Congress for the reintroduction and passage of the Protect America’s Wildlife Act (PAW), federal legislation to end aerial killing of wolves once and for all.

We need to raise $150,000 before December 31st to launch our new campaign in January to stop Palin’s planned wolf slaughter. Will you help?

Donate $25.00, $50.00, $100.00 or whatever amount you can afford today to help support these and other efforts to save wolves and other wildlife, and we’ll put your year-end tax-deductible contribution to work right away.

With your help, I know we can succeed. Together, we were able to stop Governor Palin’s ghastly $150 bounty for the severed paws of slaughtered wolves, block Palin’s stealth campaign to stifle the voice of Alaska’s citizens on wildlife issues and spotlight Palin’s support for aerial killing and other anti-wildlife policies in the national media.

And, with the help of caring people like you, our sister organization Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund was able to help stop Palin from becoming our next Vice President and spreading her anti-wildlife politics across the country.

We can win, but we can’t do it without you. Please make a tax-deductible contribution of whatever you can today to help us save wolves.

With Gratitude,

Southern forests stand a chance now

Dogwood Alliance needs you to take a stand for Southern forests today. We have a goal of 500 donations of any amount before the end of 2008. Everyone who donates - whether the amount is large or small - is entered to win one of Henry Beirenfeld's beautiful hand-turned wood pens. Every donation counts and helps us hold Big Paper accountable for the impacts irresponsible clear-cutting, toxic chemical application and conversion of life-supporting forests to sterile pine plantations in the South. Please donate now. Southern forests need you.

Before Dogwood Alliance Big Paper companies never gave a thought to how their decisions would impact the forests of the South or the communities - human or non-human-that depend on them. Dogwood Alliance gave the forests and communities of the South a chance for protection by shining the spotlight on the treasure of Southern forests and giving people a powerful way to communicate directly to the decision-makers of these companies, . Danna, Scot and Andrew talked about the amazing results we've achieved for the forests of the Cumberland Plateau and how now we are expanding that strategy for the protection of the forests of the Southern Swampland. You can watch the video here.

Please donate now to make sure Southern forests continue to stand a chance for protection.

More than a decade ago even we did not anticipate the level of success that we've been able to reach with our strategy. Before Dogwood Alliance Big Paper pretty much had free reign to do whatever they wanted to Southern forests. Constant opposition to regulation in the South left the most bio-diverse forests in North America unprotected from large scale clear-cutting and conversion to sterile monoculture tree plantations. The vast majority of our forests remain at the mercy of the marketplace. The forests of the South support more life than any other in North America and yet they continue to be chopped down, chipped up, made into paper and packaging that ends up, for the most part, in a landfill or littering the streets.

But we have achieved protection for some our forests and expect to see more protected as we continue to move the entire industry toward responsible, sustainable choices that can make a difference on the ground, in the forests, where it counts. A donation today will help Dogwood Alliance continue to hold Big Paper accountable in the South.

Southern forests stand a chance now because people like you took a stand. Thank you for helping us come so far. Will you make a donation now to help ensure that Dogwood Alliance can continue to give Southern forests a chance for protection.?

Sincerely,

Michelle Smith

Development Director

We've told them about the starving fur seals and endangered Steller sea lions, the humpback and fin whales, the sea otters and sea birds... all these animals who call the Bering Sea home and who depend on Alaskan pollock fish for survival. But the North Pacific Fishery "Management" Council says they can all do with less.

Last week the Council voted to reduce the 2009 Alaskan Bering Sea pollock catch limit by just 18.5 percent. For many that will do - for years the fishery council has buckled under industry pressure and taken no action. Greenpeace has been urging that the catch be reduced by 55 percent in the face of evidence that the entire pollock fishery is on the brink of collapse - This is no time for half measures.

Pollock is the world's largest food fishery. Used to make McDonald's fish sandwiches and frozen fish sticks, the population has decreased by a stunning 50 percent since last year. Factory fishing trawlers take over a million tons of pollock out of the ocean each year. The fish cannot reproduce and recover as quickly as they are being fished.

Greenpeace is determined to take our demands further, but we need your help. If you have not yet made a generous year-end gift, please click here and donate now. In these tough economic times, you know that Greenpeace will make every dollar you give count.

Thanks to the thousands of you who have already donated, we've been able to run advocacy ads on TV stations in Alaska and Washington, release a documentary of our work in the Bering Sea, deliver more than 18,000 supporter letters to the Council, send detailed comment briefings to the Council's scientific advisors, attend their meetings and present them a letter signed by more than 20 organizations and 60 ocean scientists.

Our success in Alaska will be because of the support you've given - please make a gift now so that we can increase the pressure and achieve lasting results to guarantee the survival of the Bering Sea. Change is in the air and we need to take full advantage. Please support us today.

Drillers Eye Oil Reserves off California Coast

The federal government is taking steps that may open California's fabled coast to oil drilling in as few as three years, an action that could place dozens of platforms off the Sonoma, Mendocino and Humboldt coasts, and raises the specter of spills, air pollution and increased ship traffic into San Francisco Bay.

Millions of acres of oil deposits, mapped in the 1980s when then-Interior Secretary James Watt and Energy Secretary Donald Hodel pushed for California exploration, lie a few miles from the forested North Coast and near the mouth of the Russian River, as well as off Malibu, Santa Monica and La Jolla in Southern California.

"These are the targets," said Richard Charter, a lobbyist for the Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund who worked for three decades to win congressional bans on offshore drilling. "You couldn't design a better formula to create adverse impacts on California's coastal-dependent economy."

The bans that protected both of the nation's coasts beginning in 1981, from California to the Pacific Northwest to the Atlantic Coast and the Straits of Florida, ended this year when Congress let the moratorium lapse.

President-elect Barack Obama hasn't said whether he would overturn President Bush's lifting last summer of the ban on drilling, as gas prices reached a historic high. Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Col., Obama's pick as interior secretary and head of the nation's ocean-drilling agency, hasn't said what he would do in coastal waters.

The Interior Department has moved to open some or all federal waters, which begin 3 miles from shore and are outside state control, for exploration as early as 2010. Rigs could go up in 2012.

National marine sanctuaries off San Francisco and Monterey bays are off-limits in California. Areas open to drilling extend from Bodega Bay north to the Oregon border and from Morro Bay south to the U.S.-Mexico border.

Drilling foes say the impacts of explosive blasts from seismic air guns that map rock formations, increased vessel traffic and oil spills should be enough to persuade federal agencies to thwart petroleum exploration. California's treasured coast, with its migrating whales, millions of seabirds, sea otters, fish and crab feeding grounds, beaches and tidal waters, are at risk, Charter and other opponents say.

According to the Interior Department, coastal areas nationwide that were affected by the drilling ban contain 18 billion barrels of oil and 76 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in what the agency called yet-to-be-discovered fields. The estimates are conservative and are based on seismic surveys in the late 1970s and early 1980s, before the moratorium went into effect.

California's Share

The agency's last estimate puts about 10 billion barrels in California, enough to supply the nation for 17 months. That breaks down to 2.1 billion barrels from Point Arena in Mendocino County to the Oregon border, 2.3 billion from Point Arena south to San Luis Obispo County and 5.6 billion between there and Mexico.

"If you were allowed to go out and do new exploration, those numbers could go up or down. In most cases, you would expect them to go up," said Dave Smith, deputy communications officer of the Interior Department's Minerals Management Service, which oversees energy development in federal waters.

In California, any exploration and drilling would be close to shore, experts say. In contrast to the Gulf of Mexico, where drilling could occur in waters 10,000 feet deep, California's holdings lie on its narrow, shallow continental shelf, the underwater edge of land where creatures died over the millennia to produce the oil.

If the Interior Department decides to explore off California's coast, it could probably do so, some attorneys say. If a state objects to a lease plan, the president has the final say.

Once an area has been leased, the California Coastal Commission may review an oil company's plan to explore or extract resources to assess if it is consistent with the state's coastal management program. Conflicts can end up in court, said Alison Dettmer, the commission's deputy director.

Californians have generally opposed drilling since a platform blowout in 1969 splashed 3 million gallons of black, gooey crude oil on 35 miles of beaches around Santa Barbara, killing otters and seabirds. The destruction of shoreline and wildlife sparked activism and led to the creation of the Coastal Commission.

But when gas prices peaked a few months ago amid cries of "drill, baby, drill" at rallies for GOP presidential candidate John McCain and running mate Sarah Palin, 51 percent of Californians said they favored more offshore drilling, according to a survey by the Public Policy Institute of California.

In July, Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne jump-started the development of a new oil and natural gas leasing program and pushed up possible new coastal activity by two years.

The Interior Department is reviewing comments about which coastal areas to include in the next five-year leasing plan. Oil companies want all of the nation's coastal areas open and say they can produce oil offshore in a way that protects the environment. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who opposes new offshore development, has offered comments, as have environmental groups.

Obama's Energy Plans

Obama's administration and Congress will have the final say over which regions, if any, would be put up for possible lease sales. In Congress earlier this year, Salazar, Obama's nominee for interior secretary, supported a bipartisan bill allowing exploration and production 50 miles out from the southern Atlantic coast with state approval. The bill died.

"We've been encouraged that the president-elect has chosen Sen. Salazar," said Dan Naatz, vice president for federal resources with the Independent Petroleum Association of America, a group with 5,000 members that drill 90 percent of the oil and natural gas wells in the United States. "He's from the West, and he understands federal land policy, which is really key."

During this year's presidential campaign, Obama was bombarded by questions about high gas prices and said new domestic drilling wouldn't do much to lower gasoline prices but could have a place in a comprehensive energy program.

After introducing his green team of environment and energy chiefs recently, Obama said the foundation of the nation's energy independence lies in the "power of wind and solar, in new crops and new technologies, in the innovation of our scientists and entrepreneurs and the dedication and skill of our workforce."

He spoke of moving "beyond our oil addiction," creating "a new, hybrid economy" and investing in "renewable energy that will give life to new businesses and industries."

Obama didn't mention oil drilling. When a reporter asked him if he would reinstate the moratorium, he said he wasn't happy that the moratorium was allowed to lapse in Congress without a broader thought to how the country was going to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

He reiterated his campaign position that he was open to the idea of offshore drilling if it was part of a comprehensive package, adding that he would turn over the question to his team.

In the 1970s and 1980s, before the moratorium on offshore drilling fully took effect, the federal government produced a series of maps showing areas in California of prospective interest to the oil industry. Those maps offer clues to where oil companies would bid if they had the opportunity.

North Coast

The last proposed lease sale in 1987, thwarted by the moratorium, would have opened 6.5 million acres off the North Coast. Off Mendocino and Humboldt counties, the tracts for sale lay from 3 to 27 miles offshore, and some of the 24 planned platforms, some of them 300 feet tall and each with dozens of wells, would have been visible from land.

Tourism and commercial fisheries would have been affected, according to an environmental review then, while as many as 240 new oil tanker trips from Fort Bragg and Eureka to San Francisco Bay refineries were predicted under the full development scenario. The probability of one or more spills occurring would be 94 percent for accidents involving 1,000 barrels or more, according to documents.

Rep. Lois Capps, D-Santa Barbara, a member of the House Natural Resources Committee, recently said oil drilling will be part of a comprehensive energy policy focusing on renewable sources, but she would like to see drilling occur only on land and in the Gulf of Mexico where infrastructure is in place.

Capps well remembers the Santa Barbara spill almost 40 years ago.

"I was living in Goleta. I just had two children, and my husband was a young professor at UC Santa Barbara. It was a devastating experience," she said. "The birds and other animals got trapped in the oil. So many people waded out in boots just inch by inch trying to rescue our wildlife. It ruined our tourism for many years.

"I think about it all the time, especially last week when we had had a spill at the same platform. It was a small spill, 1,000 gallons, but it was a wake-up call."

Oregon Old Growth and W's Last Minute Timber Deal

Sat Nov 29, 2008 at 02:33:22 PM PST

Losing ancient forests

The WOPR [Western Oregon Plan Revision] has three primary alternatives, including the Bush Administration's 'preferred' alternative: Alternative 2.

Under this plan, the BLM would clearcut 139,700 acres (over 200 square miles) of mature and old growth forest while building 1,000 miles of logging roads per decade, converting pristine ancient forests into monoculture tree farms.

Clearcutting would become the preferred logging method, and 24% of all logging would target trees 200 years and older.

The WOPR effectively pulls the BLM forests out from the scientific framework of the Northwest Forest Plan. The Northwest Forest Plan was enacted in 1994 and set aside old growth forests and sensitive areas along streams and rivers to protect them - while allowing some continued logging.

After Dec 9th, it's a "done deal" --
Unless you make your Voices heard,
and just say NO, to these give-aways to the Timber Lobby ...

The Oregon Chapter of the Sierra Club has just raised the alert,
especially to Oregonians, TIME IS NOW, to Speak Out, if you care about our Natural Resources.

Because like Clinton's last-minute plan to PROTECT millions of roadless timber acres, this last-minute Bush plan, would UNDO all that, and put-in those Timber Roads, to pave the way to those Million-Dollar Trees!

Practically speaking Clinton's roadless policy has been very hard to "reverse" for the last 8 years --
So will it be, also hard to "reverse", IF George W. Bush gets his way, to open for harvest, the last few remaining Old Growth Forest stands in Oregon.

These few remaining pinnacle Eco-systems have some how managed to escape the Axe, until now:

For how much longer, it's hard to say ... Timber Roads are always the key to this modern-day "gold rush".

"There's money in them thar Trees"

What is Old Growth Forest?

Old growth forests (sometimes called "ancient" forests) have not been logged for at least 200 years. They contain a variety of different tree species of varying ages, including some very large trees that are hundreds, or even thousands of years old.

http://mvh.sr.unh.edu/...

Our Forests are a vitally important "Carbon Sink" too. They capture and store CO2, and help to slow down and reverse the trend toward Global Warming. Instead of "mining" these ancient "Carbon Reservoirs" for the sake of quick profits, we should be planting more, and managing these Forests, to maintain this astounding Natural Heritage, for future generations!

Afterall, the USA does MORE than its fair share of creating the problem:

We SHOULD BE managing our Forests, within the bounds of Science, and NOT according to the ambitions of well-paid Lobbyists.

Most Forest professionals respect Science, and long-term planning for multiple use:

Protecting Old Growth

http://www.youtube.com/...

Too bad the out-going Administration does NOT have the same respect for Science or Scientists, or even for Nature itself!

Too bad the out-going Administration, still has ENOUGH TIME to wreak havoc on the pristine Environment of the Northwest, before they finally, pull up stakes, and get out of town!

The Oregon Chapter of the Sierra Club, is calling for Action,
especially to Oregonians, TIME to Speak Out, IS NOW:

Urgent Action Alerts!

BLM Releases Final Plan for 2.6 million acres of western Oregon Forests!
Contact [Oregon] Governor Kulongoski TODAY!

Protections for Oregon's old growth forests are being stripped away by the Bush administration during its last 18 months in office. On 2.6 million acres managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in western Oregon, currently protected old growth forests and salmon bearing streams and creeks are targeted for new clearcutting and logging roads. Its time to raise your voice for Oregon's last ancient forests.

http://www.oregon.sierraclub.org/

Across western Oregon, during the first decade, the Bush Administration's plan will:

1. Remove BLM forests from the scientific framework of the Northwest Forest Plan.
2. Ramp up clearcut logging across hundreds of thousands of acres and get over 70% of the timber volume from clearcuts.
3. Reduce streamside buffers that protect clean water and fish by 50%.
4. Log some of the last remaining older forests in western Oregon.
5. Increase logging by nearly 400% compared to current logging levels.
6. Add 180 million tons more carbon to the atmosphere compared to no logging. (equivalent to the greenhouse gas emissions from 1 million cars driven for 132 years).
7. Result in 1,300 miles of new logging roads.

These Ancient Forests would be worth saving, even if they did nothing to help stop Global Warming! (Inspiration is a very nice side-benefit, for stepping up and being Eco-aware, however.)

Afterall, it is much, much harder to put those ancient Giants back, once they are gone:

Dick Cheney and Halliburton: Hydraulic Fracturing Chemicals in YOUR Drinking Water.

Cheney Helped Halliburton Hide Secrets About Dangerous Chemicals in America's Drinking Water. Please recommend so others will have this information!

Hydraulic fracturing (fracing) is a drilling technique that was developed by Halliburton. Millions of gallons of fresh water, along with sand, and cancer-causing and toxic chemicals are injected under high pressure miles down the drilling hole to fracture the limestone shale and release the oil and gas trapped within.

In 2005, at the urging of Dick Cheney, former Halliburton CEO, Congress exempt fracing from the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) as part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005. In 2001, Cheney’s energy task force report "touted" benefits and ignored consequences. His office was "involved in discussions about how fracturing should be portrayed in the [EPA] report." Halliburton earns about $1.5 BILLION annually from hydraulic fracturing.

The oil and gas industry is the only industry in America that is allowed by EPA to inject KNOWN hazardous material—unchecked—directly into or adjacent to underground drinking water supplies.

EARTHWORKS-Hydraulic Fracturing of Oil and Gas Wells

H.R. 7231 to Close the Hydraulic Fracturing Loophole That Is Fracing Up America’s Water

H.R. 7231 will reinstate basic federal standards for hydraulic fracturing under the SDWA and enable the EPA to protect our drinking water from oil and gas pollution.

Ninety percent of all U.S. oil and gas wells undergo hydraulic fracturing to stimulate the production of oil and gas.

The EPA conducted a study of hydraulic fracturing in 2004 which concluded it posed no threat to drinking water. The conclusions of that study have since been questioned. An investigative report by Abrahm Lustgarten and ProPublica found that the EPA omitted information and negotiated the results of the report with the oil and gas industry.

Scientific American

DRILL FOR NATURAL GAS, POLLUTE WATER
The natural gas industry refuses to reveal what is in the mixture of chemicals used to drill for the fossil fuel.

...documents obtained by ProPublica show that the EPA negotiated directly with the gas industry before finalizing those conclusions, and then ignored evidence that fracing might cause exactly the kinds of water problems now being recorded in drilling states.

Buried deep within the 424-page report are statements explaining that fluids migrated unpredictably—through different rock layers, and to greater distances than previously thought—in as many as half the cases studied in the United States. The EPA identified some of the chemicals as biocides and lubricants that "can cause kidney, liver, heart, blood, and brain damage through prolonged exposure." It found that as much as a third of injected fluids, benzene in particular, remains in the ground after drilling and is "likely to be transported by groundwater."

More than 1000 documented cases of contamination have occurred in Colorado, New Mexico, Alabama, Ohio and Pennsylvania. In the Barnett Shale area in North Texas, several cases of contaminated water wells have recently been documented. Here are just a few:

Methane seeped into residential water supply causing a house to explode.
• Numerous spills and leaks above ground contaminated water supplies with benzene.
Sludge pits overflow and benzene and other chemicals leach into streams, springs and water wells.
• wells in Sublett County, WY showed contamination and the contamination plume stretched over 28 miles.
Oil and gas Accountability Project has documented several serious incidents of contamination.
• A 200 ft waterfall appeared in the side of a cliff in Parachute, CO. Fracing fluids had leaked from a sludge pit and traveled via groundwater to seep out the side of the cliff.
• Colorado records show over 1500 spills since 2003 with 206 in 2008.
In Hill County Texas, goats die after drinking water contaminated with toluene, a drilling chemical. The wells of 5 families are contaminated and the water is unusable.

Just how cold and cruel is Halliburton?

One of the most outrageous cases of contamination happened to Cathy Behr, an emergency room nurse in Durango, CO, who treated an oil field worker who was splashed with fracing fluid. From A Toxic Spew? Officials worry about impact of 'fracking' of oil and gas.

Cathy Behr says she won't forget the smell that nearly killed her. An emergency-room nurse in Durango, Colo.'s Mercy Regional Medical Center, Behr was working the April 17 day shift when Clinton Marshall arrived complaining of nausea and headaches. An employee at an energy-services company, Weatherford International, Marshall, according to Behr, said that he was caught in a "fracturing-fluid" spill. [Fracturing chemicals are routinely used on oil and gas wells where they are pumped deep into the ground to crack rock seams and increase production.] The chemical stench coming off Marshall's boots was buckling, says Behr. Mercy officials took no chances. They evacuated and locked down the ER, and its staff was instructed to don protective masks and gowns. But by the time those precautions were enacted, Behr had been nursing Marshall for 10 minutes--unprotected. "I honestly thought the response was a little overkill, but good practice," says Behr, 54, a 20-year veteran at Mercy.

A few days later, Behr's skin turned yellow. She began vomiting and retaining fluid. Her husband rushed her to Mercy where Behr was admitted to the ICU with a swollen liver, erratic blood counts and lungs filling with fluid. "I couldn't breath," she recalls. "I was drowning from the inside out." The diagnosis: chemical poisoning. The makers of the suspected chemical, Weatherford, tell NEWSWEEK that they aren't sure if their brand of fracking fluid can be blamed for her illness.

Cathy Behr almost died! From DRILL FOR NATURAL GAS, POLLUTE WATER:

...The worker was released. But a few days later Behr lay in critical condition facing multiple organ failure.

To save Behr’s life, her doctors needed to know the chemicals involved but they were only given vague information. The information is considered proprietary and Halliburton threatened to pull all its products out of Colorado rather than give up the recipe information Behr’s doctors needed to save her life.

Weeks later, after Behr was recovering, her doctor finally learned the details of the chemicals involved but he is sworn to secrecy.

The oil and gas industry claims that hydraulic fracturing has never contaminated a well. They claim the public is misinformed. They claim information about the chemicals they use would only "confuse and frighten the public."

On October 31, 2007, the U.S. House of Representative's Oversight and Government Reform Committee began hearings investigating fracing.

Hearing statements by scientists and national defense council analyst, other experts and landowners found:

...gas companies not only injected diesel fuel into the fracking liquid as a part of their drilling, but also injected benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylene into the liquid which in turn contaminated drinking water, causing serious physical ailments to residents.

...we have identified...245 different chemicals, 92% of which have adverse health effects.

Save Coal River Mountain -- Now

Feeling a post election letdown? Looking for another dragon to slay? Buddy, have I got a mean, scaly, ugly one for you.

Coal River Mountain in West Virginia is a beautiful forested area surrounded by communities with long experience with coal mining as been practiced for decades. How long have these folks been settled around the mountain? Many are descendants of those who moved to the area on land grants given soldiers in the Revolutionary War. Now the mountain itself is threatened by coal mining as it's been practiced under the Bush administration -- mountaintop removal.

Just yesterday, a permit to start blasting the top off the mountain was awarded to Massey Energy, headed by Don Blankenship. Who is Don Blankenship? He's the guy who spent millions putting his own man on the West Virginia Supreme Court so he could get out of a lawsuit. Then, when he was caught vacationing in Monaco with that judge, he bought himself another. And another. He spent millions on smear campaigns so he could get his own brand of justice. He's the guy who was named the scariest person in America when it comes to the environment. This is the guy behind the death of miners in the Aracoma mine after hundreds of safety violations.

This is a guy who makes $15 million a year, and spends as much as $9 million of it reshaping West Virginia into a deep red state that supports his strong arm tactics. You think West Virginia has an "Appalachian problem?" No. It has a Don Blankenship problem.

Now Blankenship has Coal River Mountain in his grip, and if he has his way, it will soon join more than a million acres of ancient mountains, towering forests, and free-flowing streams that are turned into the acidic rubble left behind after mountaintop removal mining. And perhaps worst of all, Coal River Mountain has already been studied as a site for a wind farm. This wind farm would produce more energy than the coal that Blankenship will get from blasting down the mountain. It will employ more people. And it will do it cleanly, preserving both the mountain and the surrounding communities.

You can sign the petition in support of the Coal River Wind project, but today that's not enough.

There's only one man that can put the brakes on Blankenship before he starts knocking down Coal River Mountain forever. That man is West Virginia Governor, Joe Manchin. Manchin is a Democrat, and he has good reason to dislike Blankenship. The Massey CEO sued the governor after for violation of his first amendment rights when Manchin said he was going to look more closely at serial-violator Blankenship's operations. Apparently Don Blankenship believes that the first amendment includes not just speech and religion, but also bribery and evasion.

Despite all that, it's not expected that Manchin will step in to stop Massey from taking down Coal River Mountain. Not unless you help. Call Governor Manchin at 1-888-438-2731 and ask him to put a hold on this permit. Now. Like pronto.

The fight didn't end on election day. Get on the phone and let people know that change is coming to West Virginia, and it starts at Coal River Mountain.

Global Warming: Biofuels

We all are aware of bio fuels as products from living things and their metabolic wastes. There are many benefits associated with these useful fuels, the most important being their least contribution towards atmospheric pollution. These fuels offer significant advantage over fossil fuels, as they have nothing surplus to enhance the value of CO2 in air. The fact to support this is that these fuels are obtained from sources like plants, which already utilize significant amount of CO2 to grow and thus, equivalent amount is emitted back while these fuels burn.

Thus, these fuels are carbon-balanced fuels, as these burn with the policy of no gain no loss of CO2. On the other hand, the fossil fuels are known to be highest contributors towards CO2 level enhancement. These fuels, which take millions of years for their production, are burnt instantaneously to dish up human needs and thus, add worth to existing level of CO2. And, the result is increasing rate of greenhouse effect and ultimately, the rise in global warming.

Biofuels In Different Forms

The biofuels are available in the solid form, like wood and cow dung. In the liquid form, these fuels exist as ethanol. These different forms of biofuels are utilized for distinct purposes like producing electricity, fueling vehicles and other useful processes.

Liquid Biofuels Have It All

The liquid biofuels have discovered their wide applications in different fields. Consider the use of ethanol as a replacement for pollution causing fuels like diesel. Also known as biodiesel, due to its background based upon bio-products, this fuel has widely substituted diesel for various types of vehicles. There is no decrease in the efficiency of vehicle, and on top of that, we have in our hand an option for diminishing the pollution causing fuels. Ethanol has become the preferred choice of most of the people in countries like
USA.

Assessing The Friendly Nature Of Biofuels

The constant research in the field of biofuels has developed two theories on the environment friendly nature of these fuels. On one hand, these fuels hold significance in maintaining the level of CO2 in air, while there is a pitfall associated with it. The forests are constantly being cleared for obtaining lands to fuel the production of crops. Thus, we are loosing useful resources in the form of forests, which is helpful in absorbing CO2 from atmosphere in large quantities. Moreover, the expenses incurred on crops like corn are becoming unaffordable for various sections. Thus, we really need to evaluate these fuels for possessing environment friendly significance.

Global Warming: Arguments Against

If you aim to prove established scientific facts wrong, you need to stand on cemented base for this. If you lack this base, your ideas are just like soap bubbles, which extinct out of the scene with a small blow. The people, who have ideas against global warming, are considered to be possessors of these soap bubbles in large amounts.

These people are also the part of political set up of United States. However, their existence in the politics has been questioned a number of times. One can remember how Philip Cooney, a high-profile campaigner for oil industry, lost his job for tampering a significant report upon climate change. More recently, the well-known oil companies like Exxon Mobil have spent their money illegally to hire viewpoints against the report issued by reputed body of United Nations, that is the International Panel for Climate Change (IPCC)

Thus, the industrialists, who have something under their belly as contributor to global warming, are in the constant process to invent arguments against global warming. These industry owners have strong associations with people having political base and thus, have powerful support to popularize these beliefs against global warming. The politicians are more than happy in supporting these industry men in return of monetary favors offered by these industrialists. However, the Democrats are opposite sets of people, who are always ready to fight against environmental threats. On the other hand, people sitting in opposite political chamber are leaving no stone unturned in making people believe against global warming. But, the credit goes to eminent personalities like Rush Limbaugh for keeping the battle against global warming alive.

And, there are leading activists like Myron Ebell, who constantly use their public image to generate ideas against global warming. These personalities, known for their outspoken natures, are trump cards for oil companies and other industries to lead the mission of destroying efforts against global warming. They have very right tool to prove global warming as a myth and limit its value as a prank. Do you want to know, what these personalities are served with in return?

Thus, people with intelligent thought processes can predict it easily that arguments against global warming are generated as illegitimate children of some interest groups. If science is to be believed, then you must prepare yourself for facing the evil forces of global warming ruling the world. And this is going to happen due to lack of efforts made by people, who are constantly deviated from their paths by these baseless arguments.

Global Warming: Hoax?

The world has been divided into two groups with regard to muck talked about issue of global warming. While there are some people, who treat it as a threatening issue, there are others, who consider it no more than a joke. The people belonging to latter group argue that global warming is the result of natural cycles prevalent in the nature and human activities are not at all responsible for it. It is the view of these people that excessive debate on this topic might hamper the economic stability of countries like USA.

The supporters of global warming as a hoax take advantage of scientific researches in saying that there is no concrete proof available to accomplish the fact that humans are producers of global warming. According to them, this process existed many decades ago, when there was not a single trace of industrial setup.

As far as the issue of ice melting at alarming rate is concerned, this group of people contradicts by saying that an equivalent amount of ice is thickening simultaneously. For the reasons behind heating and cooling of atmosphere, they consider the role of natural processes like volcano eruptions. Thus, these people are popularizing the belief that atmosphere around our planet is filled with greenhouse gases by emission of these gases from volcanoes.

The people treating global warming as a hoax wants to disclose the real motive behind efforts of environmentalists against global warming, however these real intentions are still under dark secrets. These people speak further about oceans, trees and vegetation decay as other contributors towards global warming. If these people are to be believed, all the above-mentioned entities are responsible for adding methane as a harmful gas to atmosphere. These people consider human activities as contributors to global warming, only up to the level of 1 percent. Thus, by putting a hold on sources like SUVs is going to bring down global warming by a negligible value.

Thus, these believers of global warming as a prank are not ready to blame human activities for global warming. These people trace the history and cite the instances, where natural processes are depicted as major contributors to global warming. However, these people lack scientific foundations to prove their beliefs. On the other hand, the people considering global warming as a threat are owners of scientific facts to blame human activities for global warming. The issue requires another level of research to prove one of these groups baseless and act according to the beliefs of other.

Global Warming: Polar Bears

Polar bears are amongst the most beautiful animal species on our planet. The population of polar bear in the park, a few miles away from Winnipeg, has risen to more than 1,200. The female bears, giving birth to two or three infants in December, have to head their journey towards Hudson Bay in search of ringed seals. If they fail to reach there on time, this relished food of polar bears, extinct from the scene. However the journey to this ice-covered place is time consuming and in this process a number of cubs are enforced to die.

The mother teaches expert hunting techniques to the surviving cubs. The process is continued for as many as two seasons, spending almost eight months at this place. This is the time period during which a considerable amount of weight is gained by these mammals. These animals require this weight for surviving in summer season. Thus, male bears are expected to gain 1,000 ponds, whereas their female counterparts achieve 600 pounds in this period of time.

Having said all, it is time to introduce the reasons, which have proved to be the potential enemies of this specie. Firstly, these animals are hunted for meat as well as fur. Secondly, human activities have threatened their living by poisoning their world with global warming. It is because of this warming that ice melts before expected in Hudson bay.

This premature melting of ice has restricted the time period for polar bears to attain desired amount of weight on their body. The reason behind this is that due to melting of ice, seals, the only food of these bears disappears from the scene. As the female polar bears require considerable mass for giving birth and feeding their young ones, this scarcity of food adds to their woes. These females are prohibited to regain their weights lost by them during reproduction.

This has led to less amount of fat on adult male bears. Moreover, the mother bears are not able to reproduce healthy cubs and in most cases, the cubs die to lack of feed from thin mothers. Thus, the population of cubs is dropping with every passing year. The increasing mercury in the region also exploits the habitat of these polar bears, which reside in snow dens. This exploitation is not limited to polar bears, as ringed seals are also included in this objectionable issue. Thus, human activities are trying to break the existing food chains in nature.

Global Warming: What Can You Do?

As responsible citizens of this society, we all are answerable to all types of damages made by human activities to this beautiful planet. And, global warming is an issue, which requires special attention from every individual, as every person contributes his or her share to this problem. We add worth to global warming by driving vehicles, setting up industries and even by using light lamps at our home.

It has been estimates that global warming is going to rule this planet in few years ahead. In order to make it impossible, every person will have to play his role in reducing this effect. This awareness is especially required amongst residents of countries like America, which is considered to be greatly responsible for global warming. The research has proved that an average US resident is responsible for addition of 6.6 tons of harmful gases to atmosphere. With the advent of new technologies, this rate is increasing at a fast pace and it is an alarming issue.

You need to modify your ways of living to achieve fruitful results in the direction of reducing global warming effect. You simply need to follow a number of useful guidelines to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases:

  • The label of ENERGY STAR on various appliances ensures that the appliance is dedicated to consume minimum amount of power. Thus, the consumers must be aware of this label while purchasing electronic products like computer, cordless, fax machines, washing machines and related goods.
  • Another appreciated method is by providing insulation at your living place. This method brings down the value of your electricity bill and also, allows you to participate in efforts against global warming.
  • You must opt for energy saving lights for your home as well as workplaces. The fluorescent lamps are great instances of such lights.
  • It is a good idea to use faucets, which privilege low flow in your bathrooms and toilets in order to save substantial amount of water. Moreover, you may diminish the wastage of water by using heavy object behind toilet tanks.
  • You may bring down the level of fuel consumed by your vehicle by searching for a job near your place. In this way, you can reduce the addition of greenhouse gases by more than 1500 pounds every year.
  • If you are in the process of availing a new automobile, always ask for miles-per-galloon value of the vehicle. You must also opt for those vehicles, which are specially designed to consume less fuel.

Global Warming: Celebrities Involved

If you keep regular pace with environmental news and updates, your ears must have provided the way for global warming as an issue of concern. The issue is beaten to death on different types of media including print media, electronic media and Internet media. The celebrities across the globe have worn new outfits of concerned environmentalists and have joined hands with other people to smack this issue with severe blows.

The celebrities from the world of glamour are no far behind in this mission. One can see highly acclaimed actors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Arnold Schwarzenegger coming forward to shake the thinking process of common people as well as government officials to take essential steps against the beast of global warming. Leonardo has marked his presence in innumerable events associated with global warming and has also brought a small documentary, titled 11th Hour, into existence.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has climbed new heights as Governor of California, is amongst the pioneers to frame actions against emission of contributory gases adding to global warming. Thus, these actors and others have utilized their persona in bringing new hopes for the environment and society.

If you think that politicians are good for playing power games, consider the appreciable work credited to Mr. Al Gore, the former American vice president. The mission against global warming led by him has brought him returns in the form of joint Noble prize. And he has virtuously won this approbation due to “An Inconvenient Truth", a documentary constructed by him.

The efforts against global warming require some brutal truths to be explored and this is done by Michael Crichton, the person with no need of introduction in the world of writing. In his book compiled in 2002, he has tried to reframe global warming as the illegitimate child of environmentalists, who cry at the peak of their voices for earning organizational benefits.

Thus, these high-profile personalities have managed to centralize the issue of global warming through a number of steps like documentaries, books, action groups and other methodologies. However, there are always some thoughts against the flow of tide. Thus, many people strongly believe that publicity is the main intention behind these celebrity actions. If this fact is to be believed, then one should also consider the attention brought by monumental charisma of these celebrities in gaining high concerns for global warming. There is no better way of endorsing the ill effects of global warming and ultimately devising the techniques to tame this evil.

Global Warming: Clean Sources of Energy

With global warming increasing in such a dramatic way every mortal needs to find out ways to curb this menace. One of the judicious ways is the usage of clean energy. Any energy that doesn't contribute to the accumulation of green house gases is known as clean energy. The usage of clean energy in spite of being quite expensive has evolved as a need of time. The partnership formed by Environmental Protection Agency to produce green power through the use of alternative sources of energy is note worthy.

When it comes to renewable energy, wind energy is a useful option. Electrify produced by the spinning wheels is versatile and can be used for many applications. It is on of the fast developing sectors that can be used widely on a large scale. Due to this reason only the number of wind turbines in USA has witnessed a drastic increase in 2000.

The other competent source of energy is solar energy. The electricity harvested by the

Photo voltaic cells can be used for several purposes. It functions by converting the light energy into electricity energy. If this energy is processed judiciously, it can evolve as a treacherous threat for the electrical companies.

Geo thermal energy is one of the hardly known and discussed forms of energy. The heat trapped within the earth surface is converted into steam through proper harvesting channels. Just the way the wind turbine functions, the steam funnelled in form of geothermal energy can be effectively used to rotate the turbines. The generated power can be used for respective processes.

Another significant form of renewable energy is hydropower. The spin produced by the hydropower used in streams and turbines can be harnessed by rotation of the spin turbines, which simultaneously produce electricity. But it is very necessary to use this form of energy in a decisive way since it can harm the aquatic life.

There is an urgent need to switch over to these renewable sources of energy otherwise the global doomsday would be nearer and much more disastrous than anyone could have imagined.

Global Warming: Hybrid Cars

Human activity has alarmingly increased global warming over the period of time. The thinning of artic level long with the melting of glaciers has caused the dramatic rise in sea levels. There has also been a dramatic rise in the number of volcanic eruptions, landslides, droughts, floods and hurricanes. In short global warming has caused a lot of changes in the execution of the functioning of earth’s atmosphere.

In order to face this menace, a lot of judicious steps need to be implemented. The car producers have been asked to chalk out eco friendly designs and devise out ways so that the emission of gases in the atmosphere can be controlled. After all, the contribution of vehicles in green house effects is quite apparent. Countries like USA has uncontrolled gaseous emissions that cannot even be compared with other countries.

Recently an alternative solution to reduce the effects of global warming has been devised. This concept is termed as the hybrids innovative technology. The augmented consumption of gas causes the environmental problems. It is surprising to know that the gasoline that actually weighs around six gallons, weighs twenty gallons when the carbon dioxide in it combines with water after it is burned. If a hybrid car is developed than the amount of green house gases emitted can be controlled dynamically without adding to any grave consequences.

The reason behind choosing the hybrid cars is its technical working though which the fuel emissions can be decreased. It does not use gasoline and rather runs on battery. These cars get automatically switched off when stopped. They basically work on an electric motor that aids the gasoline engine of the car. But the motor restricts the functioning of gasoline through which the fuel emission of the car gets reduced.

These cards also lower down the smog by more than ninety percent when compared to the other cards. Hence the hybrid cars have note worthy innovations when dealing with global warming. They not only limit the emissions of gases but also work on constricted consumption.

With global warming increasing its jeopardising aftermath on such a large scale, the use of hybrid cars may not be a very competent option but in spite of it, if the population adopts it’s functioning a lot can be done. In a nutshell, its contribution in curbing the numerous effects of global warming is satisfactory.

Global Warming: Recent Development

Global warming and Greenhouse effect from the historical perspective

Nowadays, global warming has emerged as one of the favorite topics of heated debates. Every man has endowed this crowd pulling moot line with different interpretations and perspectives. This attitude is necessary when the entire revolution to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide has to take place.

According to historical evidences and research it has been found out around fifteen thousand years ago earth was completely covered wit ice. Though the termination of ice age came nearly seven thousand years ago, many parts of earth still had to suffer harsh and cold climatic strokes from fourteen to late nineteenth century. Due to this reason, even today this period is better signified as the little ice age.

In 1924, Fourier put forward the theory, which dealt with the trapping of solar radiation in the atmosphere of earth, which later caused the warming process. After wards this phenomenon was termed as Green house effect by Arrhenius in the late nineteen century. Even Callender supported the concept of this whole effect in during 1950.

Due to the harrowing effects of global warming taking far reaching platforms, there were numerous researches and attention paid to this subject. The need to devise systematic and methodical steps to control the climatic changes was felt. After a number of discoveries, researches and scrutinizing it was found that the accumulation and increase in the amount of carbon dioxide caused the phenomenon. The United Nations panel On Climate Change further stressed upon the need to curb the menace of global warming with the support from all the nations. In 1997, Kyoto Protocol, which was an international agreement, was held to discuss about this antagonizing threat to earth’s atmosphere. This agreement further made it mandatory for the countries to control their respective emissions of Carbon dioxide. This lead to many acrimonious debates and altercations and only after eight years of wait, this agreement attained its due approval from around one hundred and fourteen countries. In spite of being the largest producer of green house gases, USA and Australia did not root this treaty.

The other countries that had endorsed this treaty slowly and slowly started finding it hard to follow the maintenance and control due to several political pressures and limitations of gas and oil industry. But on the other hand, there are several individual companies, which have materialized this entire concept and in fact reduced the carbon dioxide emission in a commendable way. The targets specified by the Kyoto Protocol are functioning till 2012. To derive further plan of actions a G8 meeting has been already held.
